Dental prosthesis

When is a dental prosthesis indicated?

If several teeth and their supporting tissue have been lost, they can be replaced with reconstructions, which the patient can remove himself for oral hygiene, the so-called tooth prostheses.

Material and procedure:

Simple partial dentures are possible, which are attached to the remaining teeth with biocompatible, tooth-coloured clasps made of plastic, up to a total prosthesis (plastic), which holds between the prosthesis and the mucosa of the palate by means of created vacuum. Further anchorage methods are available which can be used to improve wearing comfort and aesthetics with appropriate residual dentition.

If there are no more teeth available for anchoring a prosthesis, implants (artificial tooth roots made of titanium) can be used under appropriate conditions to improve the hold of prosthesis and thus the chewing / wearing comfort.

The treatment process is as follows:

  • Pretreatment of the remaining teeth
  • Impression
  • Possible preparation, new impression and transfer of the situation to the dental laboratory. Selection of colour, shape and position of new teeth
  • Try-in of the prosthesis (possibility for changes)
  • Delivery of the completed prosthesis and instruction for handling and cleaning

Treatment goals:

  • restoring chewability
  • painlessness
  • ideal hold of the dental prosthesis
  • Decisive for the long durability and high material quality is the cooperation with a highly qualified dental laboratory, which only processes high-quality materials carefully.

On the other hand, regular check-ups and tooth cleaning are essential if the patient wants to enjoy his new teeth for a long time.

Cost:

In principle, removable dentures are less expensive than fixed bridges or implants, since several/all teeth can be replaced in the same jaw.
